Frequently Asked Questions

  • Once the Find Care form is submitted, someone from our team will reach out to schedule a free, confidential phone call that lasts about thirty minutes. You will speak with a Creatives Care staff member who is a licensed mental health professional to discuss your background, what you are looking for in treatment, and your insurance benefits and financial needs. With this information, we will provide guidance and/or referral suggestions based on your particular needs. Artists can then use these suggestions to connect with a provider and start treatment. Once an artist starts treatment with an individual provider, the modality, frequency and duration of treatment will be determined by that provider based on the artist’s individual needs and treatment goals.

  • Creatives Care staff include trained mental health providers who have a deep knowledge of affordable treatment resources available in New York City, including low-fee and insurance-based treatment options. Creatives Care has also built a community of mental health providers who understand the needs of artists and are committed to working with artists at affordable rates or through insurance.

  • Creatives Care has built a growing and diverse community of mental health professionals committed to supporting the organization's mission. These providers include psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists and social workers who have broad clinical training in medication management and/or psychotherapy. Creatives Care’s provider network includes providers with training in evidenced-based psychotherapies such as supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and trauma-informed therapy, among others. Our network includes providers from diverse personal backgrounds and many of them have extensive experience working with artists, an interest in the arts or even a personal background working in the arts themselves. Curating a diverse network of providers helps us provide artists with referral options tailored to their backgrounds and professional fields.

  • Because Creatives Care does not provide clinical services, we do not work with insurance directly. However, if you schedule a consultation with one of our staff, we can help you navigate how to find insurance or find the best options for care with the insurance you do have.

  • Many artists, especially those in NYC, rely on other sources of income to support their careers in the arts. As an artist-centered organization, we understand the importance of this work. Engaging in non-artistic or commercial work does not preclude you from finding affordable care through our program. However, we do require that artists seeking services from Creatives Care are currently engaged in or actively seeking work that is creative for its own sake.

  • We recognize that many of the people most central to supporting the future of the arts are not necessarily the ones making art themselves. As we grow as an organization, we hope to support the many managers, producers, teachers, administrators, and other individuals who are vital to New York’s creative community. At this time, though, we are primarily focused on providing services to artists.

  • We’ve assembled a diverse community of mental health professionals who specifically want to work with artists and are committed to providing affordable treatment options. These licensed professionals are currently only able to offer their services in New York State. As our community continues to grow, we hope to expand our offerings to other states across the country. We are also keeping close tabs on the current rules around professional licensing and telehealth, especially as we recognize that many artists travel for extended periods as part of their creative work. If you have any questions about this, please get in touch with us.

  • Artists can reach out at any time in their mental health journey, whether they are thinking about starting treatment, actively looking for treatment, or in treatment but needing additional guidance. Getting support from a mental health professional can be helpful when you're facing a difficult time or situation. You may be experiencing worries about your training, moving, a new job, or a change in relationship status. Sometimes these can lead to high stress or anxiety, depressed or unpredictable moods, changes in sleep or eating patterns, or make it difficult or impossible for you to focus on your work and enjoy daily life. You should reach out to Creatives Care whenever you feel like seeking help.

Our Artist Ambassador program partners with creatives who feel especially strongly about the role of mental health in the arts. Creatives Care focuses on creating a wider community that unites artists to raise awareness and foster open dialogue on the importance of mental health and wellbeing.
